Putting the social back into social media and networking

Facebook Suggests

Lately I’ve been getting back into Facebook and Twitter.  Not sure why, it’s not like I have a ton of spare or free time, but it has sort of lent itself to my work/business activities. And it all started with that old friend of mine “Facebook suggests”.

facebook-suggestsOn Friday night when I logged onto Facebook the suggested person caught my eye. Facebook was right, I hadn’t talked to this person in a while. So I went to their profile and wrote on their wall.

It felt pretty good actually so I when I returned to my Facebook home page there was an new suggestion. I followed the suggestion for them, then returned to my Facebook home page and there was another new suggestion. I followed that one too and kept rinsing and repeating for a couple of hours. It actually felt great to be re-connecting with these people. After all, that’s one of the reasons I joined Facebook in the first place was to re-connect with old friends, college buddies, ex coworkers, family even an ex- girlfriend or two.

Twitter Lists

This morning I started building my Twitter lists. I enjoy having several thousand followers and I tend to follow back about 75% of the people who follow me because they look interesting.  But I also kind of miss the intimacy of the  .. ahem  … “old days” of Twitter.

I am of course an early adopter. I’ve been on Twitter since March of 2007 and I miss some of my old followers whose Tweets get lost in the deluge of messages. With lists I can now set them up so I can follow specific groups of followers. For example I have an SEO list (of course) and a Toronto network list, a list of companies I feel really understand Twitter (I’m hoping this will become a fast growing list)  and another list I called new media.

Now I called this last list new media and it contains mostly the people I first started following like @chrisbrogan, @guykawasaki, @jowyang, @newmediajim ( I had the name newmediaMike before I started following Jim) and others like them. But why new media when it’s so painfully obvious these are social media stalwarts?

Simple.  As my new tagline states – “Today’s new media is social media”.

Today’s new media is social media

IMHO, and that’s all it is  In My Humble Opinion, new media has been around in many different forms for almost 13 years. CDs, DVD, the early internet, Web 2.0 and now social media.  Social media is today hotter than ever and there has been a lot about social media I’ve been missing out on my not being more social. All of this led me to the conclusion I haven’t been blogging about social media at all lately. As a matter of fact, newmedia Mike has been pretty dormant with all my SEO blogging activities having moved over to SEO Services Toronto.

So I’ve decided to use newmediaMike as my soapbox for news, views and reviews of what’s going on in social media. The blog posts will likely be as infrequent as ever, but then again, ya never know with me do you?

  • Interesting post, Mike. Good to reconnect. I blog too, though I'm a much later adopter.
