The “New” Google – Codename Caffeine
Microsoft appears to have Google in it’s cross hairs. Ballmer & Co. have been on a spending and deal-making spree to grow Bing, just recently signing a huge search deal with Yahoo. It’s a slow creep, a tad faster than a glacier, but Bing is starting to steal some market share from Google, it’s proving to be a formidable opponent. then Facebook announces their own real time search engine. Plus Twitter has a real time search engine.
Google has been doing more than tweaking GMail. They’ve been working on a “secret project” (aren’t we all?): The “New” Google – Codename Caffeine. This is an entirely new infrastructure for the world’s largest search engine. A new version of Google.
The project’s still in construction, but Google feels confident enough in this new version of its search engine that it has released the development version for public consumption. When you first log on you see the same Google we all have come to love. But underneath it’s an upgraded Google search.
Google has stated their goal for the new version of Google Search is to improve its indexing speed, accuracy,
size, and comprehensiveness. Here’s what they wrote:
“For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.”
I took it for a test drive tonight. I was mostly pleased with the results. For pages that are optimized to On Page SEO best Practices, you may experience a lift in your SERP. I was able to come up with some dramatic jumps, one keyword phrase jumped from 138 to 7. For the most part though second page results moved to the bottom of the first page and those already on page one simply moved up a notch or two. I am actually #2 on the Google Sandbox for “On Page SEO Best Practices”.
Then they blew it big time.
Like most of us have done at least once, I did a “vanity” search for my name – Mike Allan.

Did I mean Mike Allen? NOOOO. I did not. I meant Mike Allan. With an “A”. It’s not as if I misspelled Penatanguishine or nuclear. It’s a proper name, and MY name to boot! yeah the last time I complained about this I got this response from Matt Cutts.

But not everyone is a power searcher Matt. Ahh well, I’ve lived with it for the last 45 plus years, I guess I can live with it for another 45 plus.
