What Is SEO Success?
How do you measure SEO success? What is your barometer of a successful SEO campaign?
The most popular measurement of SEO success is being on page one and in the top search results for your targeted keyword phrase. But being successful there doesn’t always translate into sales. You need to convert the traffic to sales. I’m still number one for VHS to DVD Transfers in Toronto, yet I haven’t had a VHS to DVD transfer job come from the web since last October. I haven’t even had any inquiries or visits driven to my site for that keyword phrase. So would I still consider my SEO successful? If my goal was only to get number one ranking then yes. If it is sales, then no it’s not successful.
Top ranks are an important component of a successful SEO Campaign, without the top ranks nothing else would or could happen. Determine what phrases you want to rank in the top for. One of my clients ranks number one for “air condishing”. No sales have ever come from that phrase, but there they are at the top. When looking at phrases also take into consideration the importance of local search. It is probably going to be easier to rank for “Dentist in the Beaches” than “Dentist”. Keep long tail geographic keyword terms at the forefront of your campaign.
Before starting your SEO campaign you need to determine what your goals are for the campaign and then set down benchmarks to measure your progress and eventual success. Getting to page one is good, but good doesn’t pay the bills!
