Craigslist Phishing Scam

January 18th, 2009 Posted in Blogging, in the trenches

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I love Craigslist. I advertise my VHS to DVD transfer business and my Free SEO Evaluations on there. It is normal for me to receive a Craigslist message telling me my ad has been posted.

This morning I received a notice that my ad for my Playstation 3 had been posted. Except I never placed that ad. When I came across the line “If you did not post this ad please change your account password asap” my first thought was – Crap, someone figured out my CL password, I better change it. As my mouse hovered over the link I noticed it was a long convoluted link that bore no resemblance whatsoever to the usual Craigs URLs.

A phishing scam! Fortunately my caffeine deprived Sunday morning brain was still on the ball enough to know not to click on the link.

So be aware especially before your first cup of coffee! Phishers are out there and they want our passwords.

  • Craigslist is the heaven for scammers. I learned this the hard way.
  • I get the same sort of this for hotmail once, and I almost clicked it but my internet suddenly went down and saved it... thanks for highlighting, now this would be in conscious more alert.

  • Craigslist is a huge site and always something new happening.
  • Interesting post about Craigslist I find there is always something new.
  • Does look to be something that happens on Craigslist a lot.
