R.I.P. Pownce – we hardly knew ye
I know this is an RIP post and I just wrote about how they are linkbait not even a month ago, but well this is sad news and it should be shared with the social media community, or anyone who cares. Pownce is no more. RIP Pownce, we hardly knew ye. No really, Pownce, we hardly knew ye. It actually caught me off guard tonight when I received your death notice. I had totally forgotten about even being a member of your umm, community.
The email went something like this:
We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15,
2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new
pro accounts.To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can
save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export.
Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not
be accessible after this date.Please visit our new home to find out more:

The Pownce Crew
I know that when I did my video parodying Jerry O’Connell parodying Tom Cruise I said I didn’t “pounce on Pownce”. I changed my mind this spring during the great “personal branding” rush of Spring 08 when I joined every social media network under the sun to secure the name “newmediaMike”.
Honestly Pownce, that was the only reason I joined, was to squat on my name. But it’s not like you really GAVE anything to the social media realm did you? You were a microblogging platform like Twitter – which is where all the cool kids hang out. What did you give to us? What did you have to offer us? Well I guess we’ll never know will we.
