Online video is hot

December 4th, 2008 Posted in YouTube, in the trenches, social media, video for the web

I’ve been around the video production industry since the late 70’s. I’ve been involved in the online world since 1994, when video hit the online world I was there like white on rice. Today to me video delivered online is a natural thing. I’m so used to this that I keep forgetting.

Online video is hot.

Did you know that more than 20 million Canadian Web users watched an average of 145 videos per viewer in August 2008? (Source: comScore Video Metrix, All Locations- Persons 2+)

Video is undeniably a part of the mix to build and extend your brand online. No need to go out and shoot new video. Take a look at your existing library, what about your current video assets?

Too frequently, gorgeous footage is locked away in B-roll and projects far removed from the web and the digital marketing teams. And let’s face it; these are belt-tightening times. Hidden video lends itself to soft innovation.

Tap into this explosion in online video and make the most of the opportunity.

If you know that you are only going to use the footage for the Web, you can always shoot on MiniDV. On the Web, the quality will still look great, but the items should still be produced properly. If you are producing for web use only, you must still have a strong creative behind them. Think outside the idiot box. Ask yourself, “How can I get the biggest bang for my buck?

Here are a few ideas which can be easily implimented:

  • Do you have any commercials? Post them to online video sites (like YouTube) to make it easy for people to spread your message – creating a viral video AND getting you deeper into the social media video space.
  • That B-roll from your last product launch? Ripe for re-purposing.
  • Video messages shot for your Annual General Meeting can be edited into a recruiting video.
  • Old training videos? Put them up online and post them to YouTube and squeeze the last miles out of them.

For next to nothing and with minimal impact on your budget you can take these high-quality video assets which are literally sitting around gathering dust and leverage them for additional value online.

I’ve primed the pump now, so I’ll turn it over to you now – what are some of the things you’re doing to make the most of your existing video footage?
