Ads on Facebook- I give them an F

December 26th, 2008 Posted in advertising, facebook

facebook_f8_logoAdvertising on Facebook is a waste of time and money. I’ve been reading a lot lately about Facebook ads and how horrible they are. I can tell you from first hand experience they suck big time.

Why can the same ad on Craigslist pull in an average of 400 hits in a 4 week period to my Videozine web site, but an ad on Facebook getting 10 times the exposure pulls in only 6? Is it the psychology that people are on Craiglist looking for something while people on Facebook are either immune to the advertising or just don’t care?

For one thing I know that Facebook ads are not targeted. I personally do not like having ads shown to me to “Meet sexy singles in your area”. What criteria is Facebook using to decide to pitch me those ads? My marital status is currently listed as married. Pitching Free Credit Reports? Don’t I get enough of that crap as spam in my email? C’mon Facebook. You gather enough personal data on me to know what to pitch and what not to pitch.

The closest you have come to even knowing a smidgen about me and my interests are the ads for Backpacker and the Camping enthusiasts. Aren’t there any gems in my personal data or even my wall posts or anything I contribute to Facebook worthy of contextual advertising?

This would likely seem to be the unholiest of unholy alliances, but perhaps Google and Facebook should get together and run contextual ads on Facebook.

Or perhaps Facebook should just come to the realization that when we go to Facebook, we don’t want to be pitched anything at all!
