My Social Media Policy

November 10th, 2008 Posted in Blogging, Search Engine Optimizing, Twitter, social media

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!

Everyone uses Social Media tools like Twitter and Facebook in their own way. For me it is a great way to connect with old friends, former co-workers and clients and new people who share some of my interests. Twitter and Facebook are the only social media tools I have open in my Flock browser. If LinkedIn or Plaxo were on their sidebar, they’d be open too (hint to the Flock people if you are reading this)

I’ve been using social media tools like Facebook, Twitter etc for some time now. Why am I suddenly writing this post? Slow news day? Actually this post was inspired by a question on Twitter this morning:

I keep getting more and more Facebook friend requests from people I don’t know - how does everyone deal with this?

In order for you to know what to expect from me (and feel free to borrow this), I am putting my own little “Social Media Policy” together:

1. Confidentiality
What happens on Twitter stays on Twitter. If you tell me something that is not meant for the public it will stay where it belongs. OR don’t say it on twitter for the whole world to see!

2. Subject of postings
I post about what I am passionate about. I am passionate about a wide variety of things from SEO to social media to web videos (both watching and creating). I also tend to post crazy little things now and again if I’m out and about and bored.

I am not using different accounts to serve different purposes, (been there, done that), now everything is posted under my online brand - newmediaMike. Sometimes my postings may seem rather irrelevant to you. If you don’t like it, you can always unfollow me. When I get the notice from Qwitter I won’t tell the world who you are. (See point #1)

3. Conversations
I’ll warn you right now. I am horrible at returning conversations immediately. I get distracted by other events offline, so it may take me a few hours or a day or two to get back to you. If you really want to get a hold of me, use email, not Facebook or Twitter.

4. Me following you
If I follow you then I checked out your blog or website. There could be many reasons I am following you.

There is a catch though: If I follow you and you don’t follow me back, there is a greater chance of being removed from my followers list which I clean up once in a while.  Unless, you have a truly unique perspective on any of the subjects I’m passionate about. If so then you are fairly safe on my followers list. Especially if you are an “A” lister.

5. You following me
I check out every new follower. If you are of interest to me you’ll most probably get a follow back.

I look at your profile and your website if you have one posted there. I block spammers so you are forewarned. I’m also out of my “make money online” phase, so if you are an online money making guru don’t even bother asking.

6. Monitoring
Even though I follow Twitter and Facebook quite frequently do not expect me on 24×7. There are other things in my life. I have two kids, two dogs, usually two jobs and so far just one wife that require my attention.

So if you either like this blog, are interested in VHS to DVD transfers or SEO Consulting services or think my tweets are worth following and see a like minded person it would be nice if we hook up on Twitter.

Quality always comes before quantity. I’m not after Tila Tequila’s title!
