CanWest Global Communications have just announced layoffs.  210 broadcasting jobs and 350 publishing positions will be cut.

That means a total of 560 jobs, which amounts to five per cent of CanWest’s workforce.

I heard this on 680News moments ago. Apparently the morning show at Global Toronto is gone.  The afternoon show at CH Hamilton (E!) is also gone.

This comes on the heels of the Winnipeg broadcaster and publisher’s efforts to streamline operations.

The job cuts will mean a savings of $61-million a year and is set to include voluntary buyouts, attrition and layoffs.

Over the past two years several hundred jobs have been slashed by the company.

I’m wondering how much of this is a result of the problems Goldman Sachs, (the former investment bank in the US that partnered with CanWest to take over Alliance Atlantis) is having? Makes me kind of glad I’m changing careers after all!
