Pet Peeve #55 - Long Country Drop Down Lists

August 26th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in editorial

OK this may seem trivial to some and it is, but doesn’t it bug you when you are registering for a new site and you have to pick your country from a drop down menu?

Earlier today I registered for a new social media site for camping called appropriately enough BurntMarshmallows. I love camping, my daughters and I went on 4 separate trips this summer and we are planning a couple more before Thanksgiving. When it came time to pick my country I entered “Ca” thinking it would take me directly to Canada. After all they claim to be Canada’s fastest growing social network devoted to everything camping.

Boy was I wrong!

I landed on Cambodia, followed by Cameroon. Then Canada. I may be a bit naive but seriously, how much camping really goes on in Cambodia? Cameroon? Shouldn’t you just shorten the list to Canada and the US? With a third choice for “Other”? Are long country drop down lists necessary?

Pet peeve 55A - related to that are menus that are re-written so the United States is first on the list. Hey it’s not our fault your forefathers picked a country name with a U. Why jump to the front of the line?

Daily SEO Tip - Ranking “Inside” Pages

I was speaking with a potential SEO client today who wasn’t totally convinced he really needed my services. The reason he was wavering was that his front page ranked first on Google for a single two word keyword phrase (let’s call it dilithium separators). It was an obscure phrase and not one which immediately sprung to my mind when I thought of his company. We tried a few three word phrases which I thought related better to how I would think of his company (dilithium crystal separators) and he didn’t rank for any of them. I also mentioned that he had about 29 other products on his inside pages which he didn’t rank for at all.

He was curious about that too, why didn’t he rank for any of his inside pages? So when I checked out the keywords I discovered that whoever had done his previous SEO had simply copied and pasted all of the head content from the first page onto each subsequent page!

There was no relevance between the keywords and the content. Each individual inside page needs to be treated just like the front page, because he has so many products, someone looking for flux capacitors may not be looking for dilithium separators.

If you offer more than one product or service you can optimize for each and every product or service. I highly recommend you do.

I’m going to start wrapping up these tips with a self promotion piece. Until now I have been just sharing my knowledge with you, but I want you all to know my expertise is for hire! If you would like a Free SEO Evaluation of your website, just contact me and I will let you know where your site is weak and how you can improve it. I will tell you how to improve it and also give you the option to hire me to do the work for you.

Daily SEO Tip - One keyword phrase per page

As humans we don’t register words as single entities. We tend to place words into two, three or more groups called sentences or phrases. When writing your keywords remember this, it’s OK to have two and three word phrases, separated by commas as your keywords or keyword phrases for that page.

I have seen some pages where there are at least 150 keywords and keyword phrase combos. Even if there is no such thing as the “perfect meta tag”, it is suggested to use a  maximum 10 keywords (do you really think that the same page can rank well for a long list of different words?).  Any more and you are generally running the risk of being considered a spammy site.

This is actually Monday’s tip, I was tied up with another project and wasn’t able to publish it until this morning, I’ll be back on schedule tonight.
