Master of my own domain(s)

Everywhere I turned this past week I ran into something about domains! For me, the week started off with my videozine.ca domain expiring and me scrambling to deal with CIRA, eNom and my former web host trying to get this domain back up and running. What a mess. As a proud Canadian a bit of me is very pissed off that in order to change my dot CA domains I need to go through an American company.  There was a flurry of e-mails and many phone calls to get this issue sorted out, but by Thursday videozine.ca and all of the sub domains were back up and running.

Then the blogosphere was all a twitter with this whole shelisrael.com thing with Loren Feldman.  I wasn’t really paying too much attention to it, but it was in my peripheral vision. I checked it out and chuckled at some of his silly videos, but I didn’t really think what he had done was appropriate. This is just my opinion, but, OK Loren, you made your point, someone of Shel’s “stature” should have done his due diligence, now let him have his name back.

Yesterday I read Mark Evan’s take on this. When I read his first line, I had to sadly say to myself (and the dog laying at me feet) “NO, I checked many years ago and mikeallan.com isn’t available.” I didn’t want to use Network Solutions to check it, because if it was available and I didn’t snag it, they’d try and rip me off down the road for it. But what if it was available? So I checked through my host 1&1.

Mikeallan.com - was available! Naturally I bought it without even thinking. After all it IS my name. So now I will forever own the domain name - mikeallan.com - and I will be the master of my domain!

Be sure to check out Mark Evan’s take on this - he also has the infamous clip from Seinfeld on his site.
