RIP digitalmedia Toronto

February 27th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Blogging, editorial, in the trenches

Well I finally did it. After weeks of waffling I finally pulled the plug on digitalmediaTORONTO.

digitalmediaTORONTO was originally to be a continuation of my desire to keep the old Visual Convergence magazine alive, but it never quite became what I thought it would be. My writing became more and more personal and as I was looking to develop a “brand” digital media Toronto just didn’t seem to fit the bill.

I am becoming known as new media Mike more and more in the offline world and to me it’s a great brand.

This blog , when I get around to updating it explores what it’s like to be an old media fogie living in a new media world. I look at the various technologies which make up new media such as video production for the web, mobile and BluRay. I also discuss a lot about Social Media, which after all is the latest new media. lately more and more of my posts have been about Search Engine Optimizing, a field in which I have had a great deal of success and I am in the process of getting more involved with.

So I have placed a re-direct on digitalmediaTORONTO. When it comes time to renew the site I will let the name lapse.

How I used Free SEO evaluations to get paying work

I’m still on my search engine optimizing “kick” right now. I mentioned it to the people at Tapeworks who have an online store called DVSupplyShop and they have asked me to optimize that site for them. I also decided to share my knowledge with others and I’m giving away FREE SEO evaluations of websites.

What I do is look at the sites from my simple SEO formula and grade them accordingly. I also give them a suggested course of action again based on the simple formula I used to keep my VHS to DVD transfer business Videozine in the top 20 of Google for the last two years.

I started running ads on Craigslist on Monday and so far I’ve received 5 requests. One has turned into an SEO project for a real estate agent. Not bad – a 20% rate. I had to chuckle at one request though. The request was for SEO services for a new product that does not actually have a site up and running.

It took me a while to explain to this person that in order to optimize a site for search engine ranking you actually had to have a site. He said he has a site, but that’s not the site he wants me to optimize, but he doesn’t want to fall prey to the “new kid on the block with Google” problem. In the end he never sent me a URL to look over.

My point to the whole exercise has been to demonstrate to people that while I may not be an SEO guru or a pro, what I am is successful and I know how to get successful results. With one gig out of 5 so far, I’d say I’m doing OK with my new SEO consulting venture.
