In addition to my full time job at creativePOST I still have a part time home based business where I transfer VHS to DVD for consumers. I get all of my business for that from my website. I have achieved some success with my Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. OK - I’ll boast - I’ve been in the top ten for the term VHS to DVD, VHS to DVD transfer on google.ca for the last two years! I’m pleased with it, but I decided last night to spend a few hours tweaking videozine.ca. I dropped a page, re-worded the index and tweaked my description. I re-submitted my site map to GOOGLE and was finished. All and all it took me about 2 hours.
This morning my phone started ringing. In the course of an hour I had 4 phone calls. (I normally get 4 in a week!) Out of curiosity I did a search for “VHS to DVD”.
I was number one on Google! I had achieved the ultimate - the coveted number one position on Google. Normally on google .ca I rank about 5 or 6 but there I was in the number one slot.
I sat down to write this post, but before I did I thought I’d check my rankings again as I could not believe my good fortune. Which it seems was short lived.
I was back in my usual spot at number 5.
What happened?
Somehow I knocked my competition out of the number one spot if only for a brief moment. What I did I don’t know, or perhaps they saw they were out of the number one spot and they tweaked too. It’s hard to say what happened. I’m still in the top ten, where I have been for the last two years, and I am happy with that, but it was very sweet tasting the top spot, even for a moment!
All this SEO success has made me decide I need to re-hone my SEO skills. I’ve been dabbling in SEO for my own sites for the last ten years. It all started out years ago with my own web design company mediaworx.to - I was able to achieve number one rankings on YAHOO (the search engine back in the day) for the keywords - search engine optimization!
Of course this was in the early days of search engine rankings and my stay at the top only lasted a few months. I repeated this feat a few years ago when a friend and I tried to get into the podcast production services business with our appropriately named company “Podcast Production Services”. We were number one on Google for a few weeks. Now flush from this latest success I’m going to hone these rudimentary skills. Who knows I may have an SEO guru inside of me just waiting to get out!
